DIRIGO STORIES: 'Local Brew' show gives behind-the-scenes look at Maine breweries
PORTLAND (WGME) – A passion project on beer in Maine is set to debut the sixth episode of a web series that’s received tens of thousands of views online.
“Part of the reason I wanted to do the show is to get into these breweries and see what they're all about,” Bowman said. “The show gives me a backstage pass to go into these places that most people don't get to experience.”
Bowman hired Matt Delamater to host the series, which plans to debut an episode about Oxbow Beer at the end of the month.
“A lot of small breweries (are) creating these specialized, niche products, and people are really turning out for them” Delamater said. “It’s amazing.”
Because the show is filmed on their own time, “Local Brew” averages about one episode a year. Still, the series has garnered thousands of views online, thanks to craft beer enthusiasts from across the country.
“It’s a blast to make,” Bowman said.
Each episode goes behind-the-scenes of the brewery and has featured Allagash Brewing Company, Funky Bow, Baxter Brewing Co., Bissell Brothers, and Maine Beer Company. Delamater interviews the owners, brewers, and employees, and usually gets hands-on with the brewing or canning process.
“I feel like every time we did an episode or every time I met someone, I learned something new,” Delamater said.
“Part of the show, I hope, is to see some of these breweries, see their stories and try their beer,” Bowman said. “We’ve definitely helped people bridge that gap.”
With 93 breweries in Maine, according to the Maine Brewer’s Guild, Bowman says it’s tricky trying to figure out where to go next.
“It’s hard to choose, absolutely,” said Bowman.
The Oxbow episode will debut July 28.
