Real Estate Report: Glamour meets camping at newly renovated campground
KENNEBUNKPORT (WGME) -- A major renovation has turned a once forgotten campground into a one-of-a-kind experience in Maine.
There's something for everyone at Sandy Pines Campground in Kennebunkport, including a new type of camping that's trending across the world.
Tim Harrington knows family camping trips create lifelong memories. That's why the real estate developer, who already owns a number of hotels and restaurants in the Kennebunkport area, has always wanted to own a campground. Then last year, a 60 acre, beach-forest property went up for sale.
"I think someone thought maybe it would be a real estate development, a subdivision and for me it was super important that it stayed a campground,” Harrington said.
After a multi-million-dollar renovation, Sandy Pines opened about a month ago.
Sandy Pines has something for everyone, from traditional campsites for about $40 a night to park models you can own for about $90,000.
“It allows people from all socioeconomic backgrounds to be able to come to Kennebunkport, which I think is really important,” Harrington said.
If you're looking for luxury, Sandy Pines has it in full supply.
Glamorous camping or "glamping" in 12 safari tents offer a unique, upscale experience with amenities like a mini fridge and even air conditioning.
Each tent is decorated by a different New England designer, from "Out of Africa" inspired by Nicola's home to mid-century modern by James Light Interiors.
"They're pretty spectacular, the fact that they're all equipped with all the amenities that a camper would need to essentially just show up and you know, have a great weekend, is pretty phenomenal,” Katie Latulip, Littleton, New Hampshire, said.
Harrington hopes families will create memories for many years to come.
“This is a real asset to the community, so I’m proud to have been able to bring it back and bring it back really strong,” Harrington said.
The campground is open from May to October.
The glamping tents cost about $240 to $260 a night. They're already very popular so it may be tough to find availability this season, but you can find more information at sandypinescamping.com.
