Real Estate Report: Scratch Bakery plans second location
SOUTH PORTLAND (WGME) - If you want fresh bagels from Scratch Bakery on a weekend, get there early, and pack your patience for a long wait.
From decadent desserts, to crusty breads, you might say Scratch Bakery in Willard Square is a slice above the rest.
On any given weekend, Bob Johnson says customers wind past the pastries, to wait to get their hands on the crusty treats near the door.
"It can be a half hour, 40 minutes while bagels come out," Johnson said. "People take a dozen. We're only doing a few dozen at a time."
That's because it's a small space, with limited ovens, but that's about to change.
This is the old Getty gas station on Broadway, just blocks away, and what Johnson hopes, is the answer to production back-ups.
This smaller building next door will be a toast bar for customers to eat in.
Johnson says everything at the Willard Square location will stay as is.
It's what Johnson hopes will be the icing on the cake for customers.
Given that it's an old gas station, Johnson says all the environmental clean-up is done.
Now he hopes to open by late summer.
