GRAY (WGME) -- An abandoned baby moose is now at its new home in Gray.

As CBS 13 first reported Tuesday, the little moose, who is almost two weeks old now, got separated from its mother in northern Maine.

Last week, a family found it calling for its mom.

They contacted wardens, who asked the family to wait 24 hours for the mom to return, but she didn't.

The wardens determined that they would take possession of the moose, but before that happened, the family, and its dog, made quick friends with the little moose.

Officials say it's rare for a baby animal to be abandoned by its mother.

That's why they ask people who see animals who appear to be alone not to touch them, there's a good chance mom isn't too far away.

As for the moose, she will remain at the wildlife park for now.

They will decide at a future date if she'll be released to the wild, or stay in captivity.
