Gold medal winner visits Greely Middle School
CUMBERLAND (WGME) -- A gold medal Olympian is in Maine, visiting 5th graders at Greely Middle School in Cumberland.
Bill Becklean was a member of the 8-man U.S. Rowing Team in the 1956 Summer Games.
The team originally lost in the first round, but, they worked their way through the losers’ bracket, taking home the gold.
Friday, Becklean had a message for athletes competing in South Korea.
“All you can expect is to do your best, if you finish the race and you finish in 6th place or 28th place and you can say to yourself, ‘I did my best,’ I think you should feel satisfied,” Becklean said.
Becklean also had a message for the students Friday.
He told the crowd of kids about one athlete who showed up late, and missed out on competing in Olympics for rowing back in 1956.
He says that shows how important it is to be on time.
