Maine DOT sees less crashes on I-295 after lowering speed limit
PORTLAND (WGME) – The Maine Department of Transportation says it is seeing fewer crashes on a busy stretch of highway after the speed limit was lowered last year.
Officials saw a sharp increase in crashes after increasing the speed limit to 70-miles-per hour between Portland and Brunswick.
Ted Talbot with Maine DOT says after lowering the limit back to 65, the number of crashes dropped 18 percent.
Talbot went on to say the department needs three years of data before deciding on exactly what is causing the drop in accidents.
