Man accusing former sheriff of sexual assault now behind bars
PORTLAND (WGME) -- The man accusing former Oxford County Sheriff Wayne Gallant of sexual assault is now behind bars.
Michael Marks was in court Thursday morning on a charge that he violated his probation.
According to court records, Marks was arrested less than a week after he made the sexual assault accusation.
Authorities say Marks violated his probation by having contact with a woman he was supposed to stay away from after a conviction for aggravated assault.
According to records and statements in court Thursday, Marks and the woman were in love and spent the night together this past March.
Marks' attorney says the woman got upset when she learned Marks began the process to sue Gallant and called to report the probation violation.
That attorney read a statement from Marks in court.
“She chose to turn against me in an effort to protect the sheriff who she had grown close to after my arrest in November 2014,” Marks’ attorney, Cory McKenna said.
Marks was sentenced to 90 days in jail for the probation violation.
An attorney for the woman in the case would not comment on her relationship with Wayne Gallant but called Michael Marks a "dangerous man."
Gallant and his attorney have not responded to the allegation of sexual assault.
Gallant has not been charged with any crime.
