Man injured, pets die in Old Orchard Beach fire

OLD ORCHARD BEACH (WGME) -- A fire destroyed an Old Orchard Beach home Saturday afternoon, injuring a man and killing a family's pets.

It broke out just before 5 p.m. on Harmon Avenue.

The fire officials say it started in the basement, and crews arrived to find flames shooting out of the windows.

Crews from Scarborough, Saco, and Biddeford helped put out the blaze.

Fire officials say the man who called in the fire suffered burns on his hands and was taken to the hospital.

A family lives in the home, but they were out of town this weekend.

The Old Orchard Beach fire chief says that one dog and three cats died in the fire.

Old Orchard Beach Recreation is organizing donations for the family, asking families in the community to contribute. They asked specifically for gift cards, and posted a list of clothing and shoe sizes on their Facebook page.

Donations can be delivered to the Old Orchard Beach High School starting Monday.
