SKOWHEGAN (WGME) – Neighbors are defending a mother charged with endangering the welfare of her 2-year-old child.

Skowhegan police say they found the little girl lying next to her unconscious mother.

This all started when Skowhegan officers responded to a complaint about loud music in an apartment building. After banging on the door with no answer, officers climbed a ladder, looked in the window, and saw a naked toddler lying on the floor next to her mother.

Neighbors say 28-year-old Stephanie Freeman is a good mother, in spite of her recent arrest on a charge of endangering the welfare of a child. Early Sunday morning, with music blaring in the apartment, two officers say they climbed in the window and tried to wake Freeman, who they say was so drunk she was passed out.

Officers told the court the apartment was atrocious, with cat feces and vomit on the floor, along with empty beer cans and open prescription bottles. They say the only electricity in the apartment was an extension cord from a neighboring apartment; used to play a radio. Police say the only thing in the refrigerator was half a case of beer and a bag of cheese.

Police say after mother and child were checked out at the hospital, they arrested Freeman. DHHS placed the child in the care of her grandmother.

Stephanie Freeman pleaded not guilty and was released from jail. No alcohol or drugs is a condition of her release. Her next court date is in September.
