AUBURN (WGME) -- A woman was stabbed multiple times in her Auburn home Tuesday night, and neighbors came to her rescue to hold her attacker back.

Police say 41-year-old Kelly Cardona was stabbed multiple times inside of her home on Clover Lane.

Witnesses told police the Cardona was chased outside by a man with a long kitchen knife. They heard him yell "I'm going to kill you,” according to the Sun Journal.

Witnesses told the Sun Journal that both the victim and the attacker were covered in blood. Several men from neighboring houses ran and tackled the man to prevent him from injuring the woman any further.

When first responders arrived, they ripped off the Cardona's clothes in order to locate her stab wounds.

Auburn Police arrested 44-year-old Eric Griffey and charged him with elevated aggravated assault.

She was then rushed to Central Maine Medical Center. She is listed in good condition.

Police say the couple's 5-year-old son was home at the time of the incident. He has been placed with relatives.

Neighbors say Cardona and Griffey moved into the house just two or three weeks ago.

Griffey is being held at the Androscoggin County Jail on $25,000 cash bail.
