Skowhegan man headed back to prison for child porn

SKOWHEGAN (WGME) -- A Skowhegan man is heading back to prison on child porn charges and tells investigators he's been looking at the material since he was a teenager.

Phillip Carlo pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing sexually explicit material and agreed to serve five years behind bars.

"It absolutely warrants that," said Somerset County District Attorney Maeghan Maloney.

She called it a disturbing case.

"Over 20,000 images," said Maloney. "They are images of children under the age of 10 involved in sex acts with adult men."

According to court paperwork, Skowhegan police found the evidence in June when they executed a search warrant at Carlo's Water Street apartment.

"These are real children being harmed," said Maloney. "These aren't cartoons. These aren't drawings. They're real children. That's why these cases are so important."

Maloney said the more people watch child porn, the more others create it, so her office takes these cases very seriously. It's why she pushed for Carlo to serve the maximum sentence.

"Ten years, all but five years suspended, and three years probation," Maloney said. "And a lifetime on the sex offender registry."

Carlo was convicted of distributing child pornography in Virginia in 2005 and spent about 33 months in prison.

His mother didn't want to speak on-camera, but told CBS 13 it's an addiction her son has been battling since he was just 13-years-old. She said he's been getting counseling in Bangor for six months, but worries it's all for nothing since he won't get any help behind bars.

Maloney hopes this will be a turning point.

"It's definitely a step in the right direction to admit you have a problem and take it seriously," she said.

Carlo will be sentenced and taken into custody on April 3.
