Thousands of Mainers affected by data breach

PORTLAND (WGME) – More than 2,000 people have been affected by a recent data breach in Maine.

The Maine Office of Information Technology is starting to notify people Monday.

The office says back in September as part of a technology system upgrade, information from the child welfare services database was posted on a third party website.

Compromised information includes names, addresses, social security numbers as well as children’s names and their legal guardians.

The state's chief information officer said in a statement that while the information was posted it was only accessed once.

He says they have no reason to believe the access was malicious but says it's their responsibility to notify those affected and offer them help.

The office is sending notifications in the mail to the people exposed and offering one year of credit monitoring services.

The office also suggests those affected put a freeze on their credit and consider placing a 90-day fraud alert on their credit report.
