LEWISTON (WGME) -- A vigil will be held at the Lewiston Middle School gym entrance for a middle school student who lost his life while on a field trip Tuesday.

School officials say 13-year-old Rayan Issa was playing football in the water while on a field trip at Range Pond State Park.

They say he went under the water and never came back up.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene. A firefighter eventually found Issa and preformed CPR.

He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Superintendent Bill Webster says a robo call and letter went out to parents alerting them of the tragedy.

Grief counselors are at Lewiston Middle School and will be for the rest of the school year.

His death is having a severe impact on the entire school community and by that I would take it that this student was well loved by his classmates,” Superintendent Webster said.

Webster says he's waiting for the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office to conclude its investigation.

From there he'll go over plans and procedures with the district.

Wednesday’s vigil will begin at 6 p.m.
