GARDINER (WGME) -- A 5-year-old boy, who was left alone on a school bus, tried walking home by himself on a busy Route 201 Tuesday afternoon.

MSAD 11 Superintendent Patricia Hopkins says it happened in Gardiner.

She says the young student was not dropped off at his home, and stayed on the bus unnoticed when it returned to the garage.

The boy tried walking home along Route 201 and was spotted by a concerned citizen. He was then given a ride home by police.

The superintendent says, "I can assure you that the school district has taken this matter extremely seriously and has initiated an investigation."
