GOFFSTOWN, N.H. (AP) -- A man says he caught a hungry black bear trying to run off with his bird feeder outside his home.

Jason Alexander told WBZ he spotted the bear just before 10 a.m. Sunday in Goffstown. The animal dropped the feeder but later snacked on some seeds in Alexander's driveway.

Bear sightings appear to be on the rise this summer, partly due to drought conditions. The lack of rain has led to a poor berry crop, causing bears to seek food from trash cans and bird feeders.

New Hampshire Fish and Game officials are warning residents to secure their trash cans, take down bird feeders and maintain a safe distance if they encounter a bear.
