Saving You Money: In Season Produce

PORTLAND (WGME) -- Buying groceries for your family can be expensive so people are always looking for ways to save.

In this week's Saving You Money, we take a look at how buying items in season can help you out when it comes to your weekly grocery bill.

According to local nutritionist Sara Sullivan, when you're buying produce that is out of season, often the items are coming from other parts of the country, even other parts of the world, so there are huge shipping costs that are passed along to the consumer.

That's why it's so important to shop for items that are in season.

Sullivan says you need to do some homework and pay attention while you are shopping. That means looking online to figure out what is in season and also you can tell by whatever is in abundance or on sale.

Not only is it a great way to save money, but when you are using veggies and fruit that are local, it is a great way to stay healthy.

Sullivan adds that the best foods for our body are foods that are intended to grow in the area we live.

You can save money by freezing or canning some of the items in season.

You can do this with everything from fruit to fresh herbs.
