PORTLAND (WGME) -- The state has put out a new warning about paving scams.

Mainers have been hit hard by these in the past, and the attorney general says they're on the rise again.

The scammers will often pose as paving contractors, saying they were doing work nearby and can use the leftover asphalt from that job to do your driveway, too.

They'll often quote you a very low estimate, or provide none at all, and ask for money up front.

Once the scammer leaves, they usually vanish without a trace, and the work often ends up being incomplete or poorly done.

So what are some ways to protect yourself?

  • First, always sign a contract before any work begins. Maine law requires contractors soliciting door to door to give you a contract, and they must wait three business days before actually starting work.
  • Beware of pressure tactics. Scammers will often use them to get you to act quickly so you don't look into your rights.
  • Finally, be leery of paying for this type of work all up front and in cash. That can allow a scammer to run off with the money before beginning work.

The spring is prime time for these types of scams to flourish, so be sure to know your rights and be prepared.
