PORTLAND (WGME) – As the housing crisis continues, some affordable housing developers are bringing in local high-end art to brighten the rooms.
It’s part of a partnership with Community Housing of Maine and the Maine Art Collective.
The housing developers are purchasing pieces to hang in the common areas of two affordable housing units in Portland and Hallowell.
Those involved say it’s creating more opportunities for local artists to have their work seen while giving residents a chance to enjoy art they may not be able to afford on their own.
“Everyone should have access to art,” Maine Art Collective Artist Marni Prince said. “It shouldn’t just be for those who are affluent.”
“Well, I think artwork really lights up people’s world and helps people to really think and contemplate,” Community Housing of Maine Executive Director Cullen Ryan said. “I also think it creates a sense of warmth and comfort for folks.”
“There are so many blank walls, and the biggest challenge for artist is where are we going to get to hang our art, so it’s been such a gift to fill the walls with our art,” Maine Art Collective Artist Sue Vittner said.
The work will be on display permanently.
