CAT Ferry to leave Portland after this season
PORTLAND (WGME) – The CAT Ferry will be leaving Portland, and potentially moving to Bar Harbor, after this season.
Portland Mayor Ethan Strimling says the move is not a surprise, and not a huge financial loss for the city.
Last month, the Bar Harbor Town Council voted to purchase a terminal from the state, giving a place for the CAT to dock.
The CAT runs between Portland and Nova Scotia daily, but Customs requirements have caused congestion for passenger loading and unloading in Portland.
"There was a conversation where Customs, federally, was saying to them they were going to have to spend $10 million to fix up a Customs facility for the cars coming off the boat," Strimling said.
Mayor Strimling says the move does open new opportunities, either for more cruise ships or other options along the waterfront.
