HARPSWELL (WGME) – A Maine non-profit says a seal crisis is sweeping across the Maine coastline.

Seals have been found dead at several beaches, including 11 dead in Saco.

The number of dead and injured seals has escalated over the past three days to 50 found between Portland and Kittery.

Marine Mammals of Maine says over those three days 40 of the seals found were dead.

The ages range from pups to full grown adults.

The non-profit says why all these harbor seals are dying is a mystery, but it is confident that it is not an animal attacking them.

“We're not sure if it's environmental, looking at the recent high tides,” Executive Director Lynda Doughty said. “Some people wonder if there's some kind of diseases going on so we are looking at that too."
