GRAY (WGME) -- A former bus driver has been charged with assault for allegedly striking an autistic teenager.

Saco police say a witness saw it all happen, when the driver transported the student from his hometown in Gray to his special needs school in Saco.

Fifty-eight-year-old Raymond Files is the man accused of hitting the 19-year-old.

CBS 13 spoke with the superintendent for SAD 15, and he says Files drove for the district from January 2014 until August 16, 2018, two days after the incident happened.

The superintendent was restricted on the information he could share.

The report from Saco police has almost all of the details redacted. The incident is still under investigation.

However, we do know a witness reported the alleged assault on the bus on August 14 at the Margaret Murphy Centers for Children, where the alleged victim was dropped off.

According to the young man's mother, her autistic son was spinning his seatbelt on the bus, a habit of his.

She says the bus driver told him to buckle up.

She says he continued spinning the seat belt, and Files supposedly yelled and hit him on the head.

“If it wasn't for the aid on the bus that spoke up and did the right thing, the video tape probably wouldn't have been reviewed,” mother Melissa Seavy said. “The video tape showed everything. It's very disturbing."

CBS 13 has reached out to Raymond Files, but we have not heard back.
