FREEPORT (WGME) – A Freeport landmark, and well-known attraction, has new owners Thursday night.
The Desert of Maine has been purchased by Freeport residents Mela and Doug Heestand.
The Desert of Maine is considered a geological wonder with vast expanses of sand, that's attracted tourists for nearly a century, dating back to 1925.
The new owners say they're planning a large renovation, including the campground.
They also say admission to the Desert of Maine will be free for Freeport residents during the upcoming summer tourist season, which opens next May.
