Gorham police investigating deadly crash
GORHAM (WGME) – Gorham police are investigating a fatal single car crash on the Windham town line.
A passerby on the bridge spotted the car upside down in the Presumscot River at 6:30 Thursday morning.
The police chief says the male driver appears to have gone straight through a curve, down an embankment and into the river.
He says the mostly submerged car was in about five feet of water, but because of strong current, it took a while for a diver to safely get to the car.
"At this point, there's no reason to believe there was anybody else in the vehicle aside from the driver,” Gorham Police Chief Dan Jones said. “It does appear to be an accident."
Investigators are now trying to determine when the crash happened and how long the car was in the water.
The body is now at the State Medical Examiner's Office.
Police are not yet releasing the name or age of the Cumberland County victim.
CBS 13 is not showing the car until police have notified the victim's relatives.
