Interim Oxford County sheriff sworn in

James Theriault (WGME)

SOUTH PARIS (WGME) -- Oxford County welcomed a new sheriff Tuesday.

Former Mexico Police Chief James Theriault was sworn in Tuesday.

Theriault has more than 40 years of experience in law enforcement and is proudly stepping back into office.

Theriault will replace veteran Sheriff Wayne Gallant who admitted to sending a sexual explicit photo of himself while in uniform in his office back in December.

Last week, Governor LePage made his decision, announcing on Twitter that Theriault would be finishing Gallant’s term until the end of the year.

Theriault says he understands the community's need for change.

“My passion is law enforcement. As you know, I came out of retirement. I was retired for four years. I just love law enforcement,” Theriault said. “I want to bring the good name back to Oxford County to serve and protect the people of Oxford County.”

Sheriff Theriault says he's already planning to run for sheriff so that he can have ample time to revamp the county.
