Ice jams could cause flooding along Maine's rivers
AUGUSTA (WGME) – The January thaw is partially melting the ice along Maine’s rivers.
This mild weather may feel like a relief for most, but with some rain Friday, it could cause some problems.
The Kennebec River is completely iced over. That ice could add to some issues with Friday's rain.
The ice jam can essentially clog the river, causing overflow onto land. It's something MEMA says they monitor year round.
While ice jams occur directly along riversides, other areas will likely experience flooding.
If it's off the streets and in your home, MEMA urges to exercise caution when cleaning.
Flood warnings and weather alerts will be broadcast on CBS 13 and FOX 23 all weekend.
