Lewiston police try to negotiate with alleged gun theft suspect
LEWISTON (WGME) – A man is behind bars Monday night after he allegedly stole a gun from a Lewiston residence and caused a more than 6-hour standoff.
After more than six hours of negotiations on Bates Street, Lewiston police took the suspect of a gun theft reported earlier Monday morning into custody.Just after 11 Monday morning, Lewiston police received reports of a stolen firearm from a residence.
Their suspect, 37-year-old Scott Estes was seen entering this apartment building at 287 Bates Street.
Police evacuated apartment units near the one Estes was inside, and placed two nearby schools on lock down.
Once they knew Estes wasn’t on the loose, they released students.State police troopers and the crisis negotiation team joined local law enforcement and eventually took Estes into custody and acquired the stolen fire arm around 6:20 p.m.
Estes is charged on one count each of theft by unauthorized taking, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, possession of a fire arm by a prohibited person and probation revocation.
Estes will be held in the Androscoggin County Jail, and because this is an ongoing investigation, more charges could be added.
