Lightning strikes cause damage in New Hampshire
SOMERSWORTH (WGME) – Firefighters say a lightning strike is to blame for an exploding chimney on the New Hampshire seacoast.
Rescue workers in Somersworth say they received seven calls for lightning strikes within just minutes of each other.
The calls started coming between noon and 1, firefighters say all of the reports were within 200 yards of one another, many of them coming from Franklin Street, Green Street and Silver Street.
Somersworth fire officials say on Silver Street, lightning struck a chimney and blew the bricks off of it, and into the street.
Fire officials say there was no fire, but smoke filled the attic. Two people were inside, but no one was hurt.
Mutual aid and an aerial ladder were brought in to respond to several other lightning strikes.
Somersworth's fire chief says everyone who lives in all of the structures has been cleared to go back inside.
Somersworth firefighters say they're grateful for the help of surrounding departments.
