Lincoln County Sheriff's Office investigating deadly Nobleboro crash

NOBLEBORO (WGME) – The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly crash on Route 1 in Nobleboro Thursday.

Officials have identified the victim as 80-year-old William Ellsworth of Newcastle.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office says Ellsworth worked as a substance abuse counselor, and was on his way to a to a group session in Waldoboro with his wife, Lois.

The crash happened at the intersection of Route 1 and Back Meadow Road in Nobleboro around 7:51 a.m.

Investigators say the SUV Ellsworth was driving struck a pickup truck driven by 45-year-old Ronald Shellman of Waldoboro.

Officials believe Shellman tried to take a left turn onto Back Meadow road without yielding the right of way. Ellsworth attempted to avoid the impact, but the two vehicles collided in the northbound lane.

All three people involved were taken to the Lincoln Health Miles Campus Emergency Room in Damariscotta, where Ellsworth died of his injuries.

Mrs. Ellsworth was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland to be treated for several broken bones.

Shellman was treated and released from the hospital.

Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash. It is too early to determine if speed was a factor.
