WEST BATH (WGME) -- The Midcoast is on high alert after a good Samaritan was beaten and robbed while trying to help who he thought was a woman in need.
Police say the incident happened around 10 p.m. Saturday on Berry’s Mill Road in West Bath.
The man pulled over to help a woman who claimed her SUV had broken down, but when he stopped to help, three men then jumped out of the car and beat him unconscious.
Police say they then loaded him into the back of his own pickup truck and drove to a house on Gilman Way in Phippsburg where they abandoned him and his truck.
The suspects then ran into the woods.
"She led him to the rear of her SUV where three men jumped him assaulted him caused him to lose consciousness and caused significant facial injuries. The victim never saw them other than he was fighting with them and struggling for his own safety," said Sagadahoc County Sheriff Chief Deputy Brett Strout.
Neighbors called police and told CBS13 that they ran outside with their guns.
“We needed to lock our doors immediately because they all took off running in the woods,” said Brandy Staples, a Phippsburg resident.
When police arrived, they tried tracking the suspects with a K-9 but had no luck.
The victim was taken to Maine Medical Center.
“People should be aware that if someone’s waving down for help or asking for help on the road that they need to be very cautious,” said Strout
“Especially for this area, something like this doesn’t usually happen,” said Trish Staples, a Phippsburg resident.
About an hour later, a similar incident was reported on Route 1 in Brunswick. Police say a woman in a dark-colored SUV was waving down traffic.
A security guard in a marked car pulled over to help, but when he got to the car, the woman said she was fine.
The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office is still searching for the three men and one woman involved.
They’re asking anyone with information to call police.
