BATH (WGME) -- Some older homeowners on the Midcoast are getting help upgrading their properties thanks to a big donation.
MaineHousing awarded Bath Housing Development $150,000 for its "Comfortably Home" program.
It helps upgrade homes for older people on fixed incomes to help keep them there as they age.
"A perfect example of this is somebody who may have a washer or dryer in their basement and getting to the washer and dryer can be really challenging, especially depending on the quality of the stairs or if there are handrails,” Bath Housing Executive Director Debora Keller said. “So our team go and put secure handrails on both sides, which is really important. They can put in stair treads and make it a really usable and safe place to be."
The program spends around $3,000 per home on average.
This year, the household income cap is raised so more people can qualify, from around $48,000 to just over $61,000.
