BANGOR (WGME) -- A man is accused of burning and causing other significant injuries to a little boy in Bangor.

Maine DHHS contacted the Bangor Police Department on May 5 after a young child was taken to local medical facility with significant injuries.

Police say the boy was bruised and had “severe healing pattern burn injuries” to his back.

According to police, it had been alleged that the child was accidentally injured at his Bangor home. However, medical professionals said the injuries to the child were not accidental and were inflicted injuries.

Following an investigation, police arrested 26-year-old Gabriel Bocanegra of Bangor and Connecticut on Wednesday.

Police charged Bocanegra with assault with a dangerous weapon, aggravated assault on a child under the age of 6 years old, domestic assault on a child under the age of 6 years old and endangering the welfare of a child by violating a duty of care or protect.

Bocanegra was taken to the Penobscot County Jail where his bail was set at $5,000.

Police say no further information is available at this time.
