Man charged in connection to deadly Winslow crash

WINSLOW (WGME) -- A Madison man was charged Wednesday in connection to deadly crash in Winslow last month.

Police charged 36-year-old Nicholas Smith with “causing death while license was suspended” and “false report.”

Police say their investigation started when 52-year-old Gabriel Stuart, of Waterville, was killed when he left the roadway and struck several trees.

Tiffany Hulburt and an infant were passengers in Stuart’s vehicle at the time of the crash. Hurlburt and the baby suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say Smith was driving another vehicle and following Stuart at the time of the crash.

Smith and Stuart knew each other at the time of the crash.

Excessive speed was the primary factor of the crash, according to police. Alcohol and “road rage” are not factors in the crash.

Smith was taken to the Kennebec County Jail where bail was set at $5,000.

No other information has been released.
