WELLS (WGME) -- A man accused of following a woman home from work and threatening her with a gun died by suicide after a standoff in Wells, according to police.
Officers responded to a home on Littlefield Road around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday after getting an open 9-1-1 call.
The dispatcher heard a man and woman arguing and discussing a gun. The woman was reportedly afraid for her life.
Police identified those involved and said the man had warrants for arrest for violation of a protection from abuse order, violating conditions of release, and domestic violence stalking.
According to police, the situation started earlier in the day when the man followed the woman home from work and threatened her with a handgun.
She locked herself in her car and alerted police.
The man then ran into a garage and the victim was able to escape. She was not hurt.
Police say the man refused to leave the garage and threatened to shoot police, leading to a standoff.
Just before midnight, officers say they heard a single gunshot in the garage and confirmed the man took his own life.
His name is not being released until family is notified.
