Man who drowned in Bridgton lake identified
BRIDGTON (WGME) -- Police in Bridgton are investigating the death of a Naples man Wednesday night.
“His girlfriend sent me a text, said he went underneath the water. She tried to find him, did her best to try and find him,” Travis Scott, a friend of the victim, said.
Scott says he believes his friend, 42-year-old Stephen Bricault, of Naples, was swimming with his girlfriend out to a sand bar in Long Lake when he never resurfaced.
“I don't understand how someone can just disappear where it's really shallow water, you actually have to go out quite a distance,” Scott said.
Bridgton Fire and Rescue say they were called to the scene off of Plummer Landing Road just before 7:30 p.m. and found Bricault’s body in about 8 to 12 feet of water.
“We were actually in the station doing truck checks, we were able to respond quickly,” Bridgton Fire Chief Steve Fay said.
Chief Fay says the woman swimming with the victim gave crews a good idea of where she last saw him, allowing them to recover his body within 10 minutes of searching the water.
“Somewhat murky, somewhat stirred up, but not overly undistinguished. That helped a lot with rapid recovery,” Chief Fay said.
Chief Fay says paramedics were on scene, but weren’t able to revive him.
He says investigators are now looking into if alcohol was involved.
“He was a great guy, good family man and treated my kids like they were his own,” Scott said.
Chief Fay says the victim’s body has been turned over to the medical examiners office to investigate what led to the drowning.
