PORTLAND (WGME) – There's a new vessel on the water that will help both the Maine Marine Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Called "The Impact," this is a high performance, quick response vessel, which will be based in South Portland.
The 31-foot-long boat will serve in fisheries and recreational boating enforcement, as well as maritime security.
The boat is designed to get to a rescue scene fast.
"This boat is a high-performance vessel, it is very maneuverable, it has a lot of speed it can approach speeds of 50 mph, so it’s for quick response," Jonathan Cornish of Maine Marine Patrol said.
The new vessel was paid for by several grants, and was not financed by taxpayers.
