SABATTUS (WGME) -- Sabattus Police are investigating the death of a homeless man.

Police say they got a call Monday night to check on the well-being of a man who had been living out of his car on Depot Street.

Officers checked an SUV and found 61-year-old Daniel Dennis dead in the back seat.

Police say the vehicle was parked in front of his family's residence.

Police say family and friends told police Dennis had serious medical issue, but he refused to receive any assistance.

"His family and friends, we know they tried to get him into a homeless shelter to help him out. He refused. Indicated he would rather live in his car. That's where he was," Sabattus Police Chief Gary Baillargeon said

Police say his death is not the result of foul play, but they would not speculate as to a possible cause.

They are waiting on the medical examiner to determine the exact cause of death.
