Freeport woman dies, three escape from house fire

One person died and three people escaped a house fire in Freeport early Saturday morning.

FREEPORT (WGME) -- One person has died in an early morning fire at a home on Wardtown Road in Freeport Saturday.

Firefighters found the body of Donelda Madore, 68, near the stairs in the living room inside 35 Wardtown Road.

Fire marshal Investigators said it appears Madore was overcome by heavy smoke as she tried to escape.

Three people did escape the fire that destroyed the home .

The fire was called in before 2 a.m. by David Madore, who woke up to find his home filled with smoke. Madore and other other adults got outside safely.

Madore tried to get back inside to get his wife but was forced back by the smoke.

Freeport and fire crews for several surrounding towns responded.

Freeport Fire Chief Charlie Jordan said the roof collapsed on the home. A police officer tried to enter the home and was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

One firefighter suffered a minor burn.

The state fire marshal's office continues investigating the cause of the fire.
