GORHAM, Maine -- Rookie Jimmy Duffy (Canton, Mass.) scored with 8:34 remaining in regulation to give the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears a 5-4, come-from-behind win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in non-conference men’s ice hockey action Tuesday evening at the USM Ice Arena.

The win lifts to Polar Bears back to .500 at 3-3-1 overall. The Huskies dropped to 1-8-2 overall. The two teams will meet again at Bowdoin on January 15.

Duffy, stationed at the left side of the goal, took a pass from junior Pat Geary (Libertyville, Ill.) and slid the puck into the open side for his first collegiate goal. The goal capped a two-goal third period for the Polar Bears to overcome a 4-3 deficit.

Bowdoin senior Austin Ricci (Windham, N.H.) scored off a faceoff at 5:24 of the third period to tie the game at 4-4.

The visitors built a 2-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes on goals from sophomore Jack Bliss (Chelmsford, Mass.) and rookie Albert Washco (Aston, Pa.). Bowdoin sophomore goalie Alex Zafonte (Concord, Mass.) stoned USM making eight stops, including three highlight-reel saves.

The second period belong to the Huskies as they outscored the Polar Bears 4-1. Junior Brock Padgham (Chilliwack, B.C.) came out of the penalty box to go in on a breakaway and score at 1:04. Senior Cody Todesco (Franklin, Mass.) restored Bowdoin’s two-goal cushion at 10:51.

Rookie Matthew Smith (St. John’s, Nfld.) scored his first collegiate goal for USM, on the power play, at 12:36 to cut the deficit to one. Senior Conor Ferrera (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) scored a power-play marker at 19:19, to tie the score at 3-3.

Junior Cody Braga (Middleboro, Mass.) gave the Huskies a 4-3 lead scoring at 19:59.9 with a nifty move around Zafonte.

Zafonte and USM rookie goalie Peter Ciccarelli (Chelmsford, Mass.), making his first career start, each had 27 saves. Southern Maine converted on 2 of 5 power play chances, while Bowdoin was successful on 1 of 2 chances.
