USM blanks Colby 8-0

GORHAM, Maine -- Rookie right-hander James Sinclair (Portland, Maine/Deering) combined with junior southpaw Ryan Gaydou (Dartmouth, Mass.) for a four-hit shutout as the University of Southern Maine Huskies blanked the Colby College Mules 8-0 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon at Ed Flaherty Field.

The win was the sixth straight, and ninth in the last 10 games, for the Huskies. The Huskies improved their overall record to 13-6. The Mules had their two-game winning streak snapped to fall to 4-12 overall.

Sinclair was outstanding in his second start of the season going seven innings. He allowed just four hits and one walk while fanning five. Sinclair did not give up a hit until there were two outs in the fourth inning. The Mules best threat to score against Sinclair came in the third inning when the first two batters reached base on consecutive infield errors. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners up to second and third, Sinclair got out the inning on a comebacker to the mound and a fly ball to center field.

Gaydou came on in the eighth to pitch two hitless innings to complete the Huskies’ first shutout of the season.

Sophomore Andrew Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) led USM’s 12-hit attack going 3 for 5 with two runs scored and three RBI. Sophomore Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine), junior Devin Warren (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) and senior Kyle Heath (Westbrook, Maine) all had two hits. Hapworth scored three times and Warren had a pair of RBI.

Sophomore Will Phillips (East Media, Penn.) had the Mules’ first hit, a two-out triple down the right-field line, in the fourth inning.

Sophomore Taimu Ito (Tenafly, N.J.) started on the hill for Colby and was followed by five relievers. Ito, who was saddled with the loss, went four innings allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out two.

The Huskies grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning on back-to-back one-out RBI singles from Warren and sophomore Andrew Hiller (Bangor, Maine). Ito escaped further damage starting a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Olszak scored the Huskies’ lone run in the fourth scoring after a two-out infield error on junior Zach Quintal’s (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) ground ball. Olszak had a two-run triple in the fifth scoring Hapworth and Warren to increase the Huskies’ lead to 5-0.

Senior Kyle Heath (Westbrook, Maine) drove in a run in the seventh inning with a single. The Huskies added their final two runs in the eighth on RBI singles from Warren and Olszak.

Southern Maine continues its five-game homestand tomorrow afternoon (3:30 p.m.) hosting Saint Joseph’s College. Colby begins a three-game NESCAC series on Friday (3 p.m.) with a single game against Trinity College.
